1. యాకోబు తన త్రోవను వెళ్లుచుండగా దేవదూతలు అతనిని ఎదుర్కొనిరి.

1. But Jacob went forth on his journey. And the angels of God came and met him.

2. యాకోబు వారిని చూచి - ఇది దేవుని సేన అని చెప్పి ఆ చోటికి మహనయీము అను పేరు పెట్టెను.

2. And when Jacob saw them, he said: this is God's(godes) host: and called the name of that same place Mahanaim.

3. యాకోబు ఎదోము దేశమున, అనగా శేయీరు దేశముననున్న తన సహోదరుడైన ఏశావునొద్దకు దూతలను తనకు ముందుగా పంపి

3. Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother, unto the land of Seir and the field of Edom.

4. మీరు నా ప్రభువైన ఏశావుతో ఇంతవరకు నేను లాబానునొద్ద నివసించి యుంటిని;

4. And he commanded them saying: see that ye speak after this manner to my lord Esau: thy servant, Jacob sayeth thus; I have sojourned and been a stranger with Laban unto this time:

5. నాకు పశువులు గాడిదలు మందలు దాసదాసీజనమును కలరు; నీ కటాక్షము నాయందు కలుగునట్లుగా నా ప్రభువునకిది తెలియచేయనంపితినని నీ సేవకుడైన యాకోబు అనెనని చెప్పుడని వారి కాజ్ఞాపించెను.

5. and have gotten oxen, asses and sheep, menservants and womenservants, and have sent to shew it my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.

6. ఆ దూతలు యాకోబు నొద్దకు తిరిగివచ్చి - మేము నీ సహోదరుడైన ఏశావునొద్దకు వెళ్లితివిు; అతడు నాలుగువందల మందితో నిన్ను ఎదుర్కొన వచ్చుచున్నాడని చెప్పగా

6. And the messengers came again to Jacob saying: we came unto thy brother Esau, and he cometh against thee and four hundred men with him.

7. యాకోబు మిక్కిలి భయపడి తొందరపడి

7. Then was Jacob greatly afraid, and wist not which way to turn himself, and divided the people that was with him and the sheep, oxen and camels, into two companies,

8. ఏశావు ఒక గుంపు మీదికి వచ్చి దాని హతము చేసినయెడల మిగిలిన గుంపు తప్పించుకొనిపోవుననుకొని, తనతోనున్న జనులను మందలను పశువులను ఒంటెలను రెండు గుంపులుగా విభాగించెను.

8. and said: If Esau come to the one part and smite it, the other may save itself.

9. అప్పుడు యాకోబు - నా తండ్రియైన అబ్రాహాము దేవా, నా తండ్రియైన ఇస్సాకు దేవా, నీ దేశమునకు నీ బంధువుల యొద్దకు తిరిగి వెళ్లుము, నీకు మేలు చేసెదనని నాతో చెప్పిన యెహోవా,

9. And Jacob said: O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac: LORD, which saidest unto me, return unto thy country and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee.

10. నీవు నీ సేవకునికి చేసిన సమస్తమైన ఉపకారములకును సమస్త సత్యమునకును అపాత్రుడను, ఎట్లనగా నా చేతి కఱ్ఱతో మాత్రమే యీ యొర్దాను దాటితిని; ఇప్పుడు నేను రెండు గుంపులైతిని.

10. I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies and truth which thou hast shewed unto thy servant. For with my staff came I over this Jordan, and now have I gotten two droves.

11. నా సహోదరుడైన ఏశావు చేతినుండి దయచేసి నన్ను తప్పించుము; అతడు వచ్చి పిల్లలతో తల్లిని, నన్ను చంపునేమో అని అతనికి భయపడుచున్నాను.

11. Deliver me from the hands of my brother Esau, for I fear him: lest he will come and smite the mother with the children.

12. నీవు నేను నీకు తోడై నిశ్చయముగా మేలు చేయుచు, విస్తారమగుటవలన లెక్కింపలేని సముద్రపు ఇసుకవలె నీ సంతానము విస్తరింపజేయుదునని సెలవిచ్చితివే అనెను.

12. Thou saidest that thou wouldest surely do me good, and wouldest make my seed as the sand of the sea which can not be numbered for multitude.

13. అతడు అక్కడ ఆ రాత్రి గడిపి తాను సంపాదించిన దానిలో తన అన్నయైన ఏశావు కొరకు ఒక కానుకను

13. And he tarried there that same night, and took of that which came to hand, a present, unto Esau his brother:

14. అనగా రెండువందల మేకలను ఇరువది మేక పోతులను రెండువందల గొఱ్ఱెలను ఇరువది పొట్టేళ్లను

14. Two hundred she goats and twenty he goats: two hundred sheep and twenty rams:

15. ముప్పది పాడి ఒంటెలను వాటి పిల్లలను నలుబది ఆవులను పది ఆబోతులను ఇరువది ఆడుగాడిదలను పది గాడిద పిల్లలను తీసికొని మందమందను వేరు వేరుగా

15. thirty milch camels with their colts: forty kine and ten bulls: twenty she asses and ten foals

16. తన దాసులచేతి కప్పగించి మీరు మంద మందకు నడుమ ఎడముంచి నాకంటె ముందుగా సాగిపొండని తన దాసులతో చెప్పెను.

16. and delivered them unto his servants, every drove by them selves, and said unto them: go forth before me and put a space betwixt every drove.

17. మరియు వారిలో మొదటివానితో నా సహోదరుడైన ఏశావు నిన్ను ఎదుర్కొని - నీవెవరివాడవు? ఎక్కడికి వెళ్లుచున్నావు? నీ ముందరనున్నవి యెవరివని నిన్ను అడిగినయెడల

17. And he commanded the foremost, saying: When Esau my brother meeteth thee and asketh thee saying: whose servant art thou and whither goest thou, and whose are these that go before thee:

18. నీవు ఇవి నీ సేవకుడైన యాకోబువి, ఇది నా ప్రభువైన ఏశావుకొరకు పంపబడిన కానుక; అదిగో అతడు మా వెనుక వచ్చుచున్నాడని చెప్పుమని ఆజ్ఞాపించెను.

18. thou shalt say, they be thy servant Jacob's, and are a present sent unto my lord Esau, and behold, he himself cometh after us.

19. అట్లతడు నేను ముందుగా పంపుచున్న కానుకవలన అతని సమాధానపరచిన తరువాత నేను అతని ముఖము చూచెదను; అప్పుడతడు ఒకవేళ నన్ను కటాక్షించుననుకొని మీరు ఏశావును చూచి

19. And so commanded he the second, and even so the third, and likewise all that followed the droves saying, of this manner see that ye speak unto Esau when ye meet him,

20. మీరు - ఇదిగో నీ సేవకుడైన యాకోబు మా వెనుక వచ్చుచున్నాడని చెప్పవలెననియు రెండవవానికిని మూడవవానికిని మందల వెంబడి వెళ్లిన వారికందరికిని ఆజ్ఞాపించెను.

20. and say moreover. Behold thy servant Jacob cometh after us, for he said: I will pease his wrath with the present that goeth before me and afterward I will see him myself, so peradventure he will receive me to grace.

21. అతడు కానుకను తనకు ముందుగా పంపించి తాను గుంపులో ఆ రాత్రి నిలిచెను.

21. So went the present before him and he tarried all that night in the tent,

22. ఆ రాత్రి అతడు లేచి తన యిద్దరు భార్యలను తన యిద్దరు దాసీలను తన పదకొండుమంది పిల్లలను తీసికొని యబ్బోకు రేవు దాటిపోయెను.

22. and rose up the same night and took his two wives and his two maidens and his eleven sons, and went over the ford Jabok.

23. యాకోబు వారిని తీసి కొని ఆ యేరు దాటించి తనకు కలిగినదంతయు పంపివేసెను.

23. And he took them and sent them over the river, and sent over that he had

24. యాకోబు ఒక్కడు మిగిలి పోయెను; ఒక నరుడు తెల్లవారు వరకు అతనితో పెనుగులాడెను.

24. and tarried behind himself alone. And there wrestled a man with him unto the breaking of the day.

25. తాను అతని గెలువకుండుట చూచి తొడగూటిమీద అతనిని కొట్టెను. అప్పుడతడు ఆయనతో పెనుగులాడుటవలన యాకోబు తొడ గూడువసిలెను.

25. And when he saw that he could not prevail against him, he smote him under the thigh, and the sinew of Jacob's thigh shrank as he wrestled with him.

26. ఆయన - తెల్లవారుచున్నది గనుక నన్ను పోనిమ్మనగా అతడు - నీవు నన్ను ఆశీర్వదించితేనే గాని నిన్ను పోనియ్యననెను.

26. And he said: let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said: I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.

27. ఆయన నీ పేరేమని యడుగగా అతడు - యాకోబు అని చెప్పెను.

27. And he said unto him: what is thy name? He answered: Jacob.

28. అప్పుడు ఆయన నీవు దేవునితోను మనుష్యులతోను పోరాడి గెలిచితివి గనుక ఇకమీదట నీ పేరు ఇశ్రాయేలే గాని యాకోబు అనబడదని చెప్పెను.

28. And he said: thou shalt be called Jacob no more, but Israel. For thou hast wrestled with God and with men and hast prevailed.

29. అప్పుడు యాకోబు - నీ పేరు దయచేసి తెలుపుమనెను. అందు కాయన - నీవు ఎందునిమిత్తము నా పేరు అడిగితివని చెప్పి అక్కడ అతని నాశీర్వదించెను.

29. And Jacob asked him saying, tell me thy name. And he said, wherefore dost thou ask after my name? and he blessed him there.

30. యాకోబు - నేను ముఖా ముఖిగా దేవుని చూచితిని అయినను నా ప్రాణము దక్కినదని ఆ స్థలమునకు పెనూయేలు అను పేరు పెట్టెను.

30. And Jacob called the name of the place Pheniel, for I have seen God face to face, and yet is my life reserved.

31. అతడు పెనూయేలు నుండి సాగిపోయినప్పుడు సూర్యోదయమాయెను; అప్పుడతడు తొడకుంటుచు నడిచెను.

31. And as he went over Peniel, the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh:

32. అందుచేత ఆయన యాకోబు తొడగూటి మీది తుంటినరము కొట్టినందున నేటివరకు ఇశ్రాయేలీయులు తొడ గూటిమీదనున్న తుంటినరము తినరు.

32. wherefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew that shrank under the thigh, unto this day: because that he smote Jacob under the thigh in the sinew that shrank.
