Devasahayam Pillai, Martyr for Christ in India
Devasahayam Pillai, a faithful servant of Christ, first Indian layman Martyr in India during the 18th century, stands as a shining example of unwavering faith, courage, and devotion to Christ amidst persecution. His life serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of faith and the enduring strength found in Christ.
Born into a Hindu family in the Kingdom of Travancore (present-day Kerala, India), Devasahayam Pillai was initially known as Neelakanda Pillai. Despite his Hindu upbringing, Pillai was drawn to the Christian faith through the influence of a Portuguese friend and his encounters with Christian missionaries.
After accepting Christianity, Pillai faced fierce opposition from his family and society. Despite the threats and persecution he endured, Pillai remained steadfast in his faith, boldly proclaiming Christ as his Savior and Lord.
He was arrested in 1749 after being accused of treason and espionage, and for emphasizing the equality of all people, despite caste differences. The soldiers of that government took the gun back and fired at him five times. His body was then carelessly thrown out near the foothills at Kattadimalai. It was at Kattadimalai in Kanyakumari district that Devasahayam Pillai died on 14 January 1752. His steadfastness in the face of persecution and his willingness to lay down his life for the sake of the Gospel, serve as a powerful testimony to the transformative power of faith and the enduring strength found in Christ. Pillai was the first Indian layman to be declared as Martyr for Christ.
