Bartholomew (Nathanael) : From Skepticism to Revelation - Encountered with Christ"
"Nathanael answered him, -Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!-" - John 1:49
Bartholomew, also known as Nathanael, is one of the twelve apostles whose life and ministry offer valuable insights into the nature of discipleship and the power of genuine encounter with Jesus Christ.
In the Gospel of John, we first encounter Nathanael as he is brought to Jesus by his friend Philip. Nathanael-s initial response to Philip-s declaration that they had found the Messiah is marked by skepticism. He questions, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" (John 1:46). However, upon meeting Jesus, Nathanael-s skepticism gives way to profound revelation. Jesus sees Nathanael approaching and declares, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!" (John 1:47). Astonished by Jesus- insight, Nathanael recognizes Him as the Son of God and King of Israel.
Bartholomew faced a gruesome fate in Albanopolis, situated in Armenia. He was martyred by flaying and beheading at the command of the Armenian king Astyages around 68 AD. Nathanael-s faith journey shines a light on the importance of embracing divine revelation and experiencing a personal encounter with Jesus. Just like Nathanael, we may have reservations or doubts about Jesus and His teachings. However, when we come to Him with a receptive heart and mind, He unveils Himself to us in ways that surpass our understanding.
Nathanael-s story urges us to reflect on our own response to Jesus. Do we approach Him with an open mind and heart, or do we let skepticism and uncertainty hinder our faith? Like Nathanael, may we humbly and willingly draw near to Jesus, allowing Him to reveal Himself to us in new and profound ways.
May we, like Nathanael, be transformed by our encounter with Jesus and become faithful witnesses of His truth and love in the world. Amen
